Founded in 1948, the UIA is federation of national professional organisations working to unify architects, influence public policies and advance architecture in service to the needs of society.
Through its advisory role, the UIA guarantees the prestige of international competitions such as those that led to the construction of contemporary landmark buildings like the Sydney Opera House, Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Tokyo International Forum, and the Alexandria Library in Egypt. Drawn up jointly by UNESCO and the UIA and approved by the UNESCO General Conference, the UNESCO-UIA Regulations for International Competitions outline the conditions required to run an international architectural competition and specify the respective rights and obligations of promoters and competitors. The UIA is the sole body mandated by UNESCO to oversee the application of these rules and to approve competitions organised according to them.
Fondée en 1948, l’UIA est une fédération d’organisations professionnelles nationales œuvrant pour unifier les architectes, influencer les politiques publiques et faire avancer l’architecture au service des besoins de la société.
Elaboré conjointement par l’UNESCO et l’UIA et adopté par la Conférence générale de l’UNESCO, le Règlement UNESCO-UIA sur les concours internationaux énonce les conditions du lancement et du déroulement d’un concours international et précise les droits et les devoirs respectifs des concurrents et du promoteur. L’UIA est le seul organisme à être mandaté par l’UNESCO pour veiller à l’application de ce règlement et apporter son soutien aux concours organisés en conformité avec lui. Dans ce cadre, l’Union Internationale des Architectes assure l’exemplarité des concours internationaux tels ceux qui ont présidé à l’édification de bâtiments contemporains phares : l’Opéra de Sydney, le Centre Georges Pompidou à Paris, le Centre international de Conférences de Tokyo, la Grande Bibliothèque d’Alexandrie.
The UIA promotes excellence in architecture, sustainability and cultural diversity. Student and professional international architecture competitions endorsed through the UNESCO-UIA International Competitions Programme have taken place all over the world and have resulted in some of the most iconic edifices of the 20th century. The experience and authority conferred upon the UIA by UNESCO in 1956 allow us to serve as a reference in terms of ethics in the realm of architecture and urban planning competitions globally.
The UIA also advises on the organisation of international architectural prizes. Launched by public or private organisms these prizes spotlight specific architectural realisations, materials, technologies, themes, or research. UIA-endorsed architecture prizes have taken place all over the world.
L’UIA favorise l’excellence en architecture, la durabilité et la diversité culturelle. De nombreux concours internationaux d’architecture pour architectes et étudiants réalisés en conformité avec le Programme de l’UIA pour les Concours internationaux ont donné lieu aux bâtiments les plus iconiques du 20ème siècle.
L’UIA s’associe aussi à l’organisation de prix internationaux d’architecture. Lancés par des organismes publics ou privés, ils mettent en évidence des réalisations architecturales, des matériaux, des technologies, des thématiques ou des recherches. L’UIA a patronné des prix d’architecture dans le monde entier.
